Email to SMS

Email to SMS allows you to send and receive SMS text messages from any email program (e.g. MS Outlook, MSN, Gmail, Hotmail & Yahoo) or application with email functionality (monitoring tools, databases, websites etc.).

For the majority of your texting requirements we recommend our Web SMS service, however for individual or small group texts our Email to SMS Gateway is perfect.

You can add as many email addresses to your account as necessary, all of which will be able to both send and receive the text messages.

Example Uses

There are thousands of example uses for SMS texting, here are just a few:

  • Internal Communication
Send texts to work colleagues, customers or clients from your email program.
  • 2 Way Communication
A secretary can send an email directly from their PC to a sales agent’s mobile while they are on the move, reminding them of appointments. The sales agent can then confirm the appointment by sending a quick text back, which is then picked up as an email by the secretary.
  • Single Urgent Texts
No need to log onto the Internet! Send an urgent instant message straight from your email inbox. It’s an easy, quick and effective way of sending an urgent message.

Guidelines

To send a text through your email application, please use the following guidelines.

Email From Field
Emails must be sent from your registered Txtlocal email address. If you need to send from other email addresses simply add "email aliases" in your Account Settings.
To & Cc Fields
In order to send a text, the recipient’s email address needs to be inserted using the following format: MobileNumber@txtlocal.co.uk
For instance: 07741112222@txtlocal.co.uk

Multiple recipients can be added in both the TO and CC fields of your email application.
Subject Field (Optional)
All texts will arrive addressed with your Default Sender Name in your Account Settings. If you wish to change this, either change your Default Sender Name or use sender= in the subject line to send your messages from any 11 character name or up to 14 digit telephone number. For instance, sender=MyCompany or sender=448450093180
Message Termination (end of message)
You can type a message up to 612 characters. At the end of the message add: ##. Anything after the ## will not be sent. Please remember to use ## to ensure you don’t send your signature, any company email disclaimers or virus wording.

You are billed for the following message lengths: 0 - 160 = 1 credit. 161 - 306 = 2 credits. 307- 459 = 3 credits. 460 - 612 = 4 credits
Message Start
If you need to let us know the start position of your message (this is rare - we usually just default to the start of the email), you can use #%#
Bulk Recipients Method 1
In addition to placing bulk recipients in the TO and CC lines of the email, you can also place them after the ## terminator. For example:
Don't forget the meeting at 12:30pm.##
07740101097@txtlocal.co.uk
07740101096@txtlocal.co.uk
07740101095@txtlocal.co.uk
As with any message, the text after the ## will not be sent to the handset, but a copy of the text will be sent to all the listed numbers.
Bulk Recipients Method 2
You can even forward an email to a pre created Txtlocal.com group!

You can find the ID of a group by clicking on "View Group ID" – in the advanced section of the "Reports" page in your Txtlocal control panel.

You can then trigger a message to a Txtlocal group by sending an email tlgrpxxxx@txtlocal.co.uk - where xxxx is your groupID. The email will be forwarded to the group whatever the size.

Finally, in order to ensure that the message is sent, please ensure that the email address you are sending from is the same as the one you use to log into your Web SMS account. If you wish to send from an alternate email address (or add addresses for your whole company), simply add them in your online Account Settings page.
